Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the ancient Eastern medicine practice of inserting tiny needles into specific areas of your body to balance your energy flow or qi. Acupuncture helps to stimulate a natural healing response, balances your body’s energy, and promotes relaxation. Depending on your specific condition or areas of pain and discomfort, Dr. Qadir may recommend a series of acupuncture treatments to assist in relieving symptoms that interfere with your daily activities.

What health conditions can acupuncture help improve?

Research by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that acupuncture may help improve conditions including:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck pain
  • Low back pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Knee pain
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • High blood pressure
  • Fibromyalgia

Additionally, acupuncture has been known to help improve anxiety and depression, tendinitis, and insomnia. Some people have found acupuncture treatments to aid in quitting smoking or decreasing chemotherapy-induced nausea.

What can I expect at my acupuncture appointment?

During an acupuncture session, you lie comfortably on a treatment table while Dr. Qadir inserts a series of tiny needles into specific areas of your body. Where the needles go in depends on your health conditions.

Dr. Qadir inserts the needles at various depths, but the needles are so thin, they usually don’t cause any discomfort; some people don’t feel them at all. Dr. Qadir may insert 5-20 needles during a single acupuncture session. He may gently move or twist the needles while they’re in place.

Typically the needles remain in your skin for 10-20 minutes while you relax comfortably. For the most part, you won’t feel the needles as Dr. Qadir removes them, either.

Based on Dr. Qadir’s extensive experience and training over the last 17 years, he has found that incorporating acupuncture sessions as part of your all-encompassing chronic pain treatment plan delivers optimal benefits. This combination of conventional medicine and alternative therapies helps you manage your pain and symptoms more effectively than with just medications alone.

If you suffer from headaches, migraines, and other types of chronic pain, acupuncture may help improve your conditions over time. Learn more by calling the office to schedule a consultation today.
